Remei is the second to youngest daughter of Aranos the farmer and his wife Jesya. As a young child, she was very quiet and generally sat quietly, observing. When she was seven, a priest from the temple of Pelor came and sought shelter in her village. Her family accepted him under their roof, and in return he gave the children a talk about religion as they sat by the fireside that evening.
Remei's interest in his words was genuine, and she felt something drawing her to him. So when her siblings all went off to their beds, she, for once, did not follow them, but crept quietly out of the corner. Only her parents, Uncle Remos, the priest, and Remei's eldest brother Tarel were still around the fire when she went up and tugged on the hem of the priest's tunic. He looked down at her with warm brown eyes, and she looked back at him, intent.
" What is your name, child? "
" Remei. " Usually, she was wary of speaking before strangers, but somehow this priest was different.
" You did not go to bed with your brothers and sisters, Remei. "
" Usually, she's quite good about going to bed. Remei, it's past bedtime. " Remei's father made a shooing motion, which Remei did not notice.
" She usually doesn't come up to strangers, though. Dragon's breath, she's still frightened of me! " Remos looked sidelong at his niece.
" Are you afraid of me? " the priest queried.
Remei shook her head solemnly. " No. Not of you. "
" No? Why are you afraid of others and not me? "
" Because you're good. Because I can tell you're good. When you talked about Pelor. "
" Do you know much about Pelor? "
" What you said. "
" We don't have much time for religion these days, " Remei's father apologized. " There's much to do. "
" What would you think of your daughter studying at the temple? "
" Remei? At the temple? "
" Why not? " Remei's mother looked at her youngest daughter, standing quietly and watching " The temple will give her a better life. "
" We can't afford to send her away to study, " Andros protested.
" If Pelor is calling her to come to the temple, then she should go to the temple. " The priest took Remei's right hand in both his own, looking intently at her. " I believe she is called to the service of Pelor, and that she must come to the temple to study. Not all must pay fees. "
" Remei, go to bed. " This time her father was not going to be ignored, and Remei slipped quietly off to lie with her sisters in the dark room they shared.
