Karita is the eldest daughter of the mage Tiras and the cartographer Sanya, with only one other sibling - her brother Elian, four and a half years her junior. She does have several extended family members, however - she has yet to meet many of them.
As a small child, she was tended by her cousin Azyan, who came specifically to watch the child while her aunt and uncle worked. Azyan stayed with the family until both Karita and Elian were old enough not to need constant tending - that is, until Elian turned six. When Elian was born, Karita was four-and-a-half - and a very bright four-and-a-half at that. So she was allowed, provided she remained absolutely quiet and made no trouble, to sit in her mother's shop and look at the maps on the walls, and see the customers.
