Most members of my family played some role or another in the Greyhawk Wars. Grandfather and Master Jarek went to offer their services as spellcasters to Veluna at the beginning of the Wars, and have spent the Wars going wherever Canon Hazen has sent them, serving to the best of their ability. They have come to visit when they have had leave enough, and I have learned much of the Wars from their stories, which are recorded in other volumes and which I will not relate here.
Mother also offered her services, as a healer. Sometimes she would go to the front or to the hospices and tend the wounded from the front and the wounded refugess, or else serve as a substitute for another healer who had left their regular post to go to the front. When she was at home, she would sometimes bring refugees who were somewhat wounded but could still travel, and she spent much time seeking out and preparing herbs to help those in battle.
Grandmother and I remained at home, and Grandmother offered our home as a shelter for refugees, so we have had many guests with stories from the front as well. I have helped her with the refugees, and with the matters of running a household and such, in between the times I was studying.
Severin cared little that the Wars were going on, and continued on as always, writing complex and emotionless music. He made no attempt to offer any assistance whatsoever to the war effort, although at one time he could have served well crafting potions and spells, Grandfather says. But he did not even deign to write ballads for the war or anything - as far as Severin was concerned, there was no war.
Uncle Korian wrote ballads to inspire the soldiers, and crafted drums and fifes for signalers. He also took notes on the Wars, and researched anything that might be of aid, and made several trips to the front to sing to the soldiers and raise their spirits. Taliesin helped his father in these tasks, being very much like Uncle Korian and a dedicated student of the bardic arts. Auntie Adalya helped Grandmother, or went to help at temples, or to the front to pray for the soldiers, or wherever she happened to be needed.
So all in all, I am proud of my family's service in the Wars - except for Severin's, but Grandmother says I mustn't blame him for the way he is now. And I am determined that I shall be of the best service I may, whatever that may be. I believe that soon I may leave and offer my services to Veluna. At nineteen, I am more than old enough to join the army, and Grandmother is more than able to care for the estate with the aid of the few servants she can trust.
