Modes

Modes are often referred as a scale started in one of it's degrees. This is mostly used for Major scale modes.

There are 5 major scale modes:

Ionian (major) - model root note C
Dorian - model root note D
Phrygian - model root note E
Lydian - model root note F
Mixolydian - model root note G
Aeolian (minor) - model root note A
Locarian - model root note B

If you analyze this, you'll realize that they all are the same scale. So, the mode you are playing in isn't determined by the note you start playing in, it's determined by the chord progression you play over. For a more detailed explanation, go here

Now, if we, for example, want to make the G Locarian scale, we will do this:

So the G Locarian scale would be: G, G#, A#, C, C#, D#, F
