Samoa
Samoa, previously known as Western Samoa until 1997, comprises nine
islands in the South Pacific Ocean, of which the largest are Savai'i and
Upolu. She achieved independence from New Zealand in 1962. Most of the
population live on Upolu, where Apia, the capital, is located. The
population is predominantly Polynesian and the official languages are
Samoan and English. The islands cover an area of 1,133 sq mi (2,934 sq km)
and are located south of Hawaii and north east of New Zealand. The
islands have a population of 219,509 (1997).
