Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are the reasons cubs and parents join and stay in our group?
  2. What is the time commitment?
  3. To understand time commitment, you first need to understand how our group is organized. In cub scout, our group of parents and kids are called a pack. Our group is known as Pack408. A pack is divided into several smaller group based on grade level. Each small group is called a den.

Grade 1 is called Tiger den (acting leader: Paul Robinson)
Grade 2 is called Wolves den (leader: Paul Robinson)
Grade 3 is called Bear den (leader: Hengfu Hsu)
Grade 4 is called Webelos den (leader: Christina Chu)
Grade 5 is called Webelos II den (leader: Wei-Lun Kao)

So time commitment, you are looking at:

Most of us in the group prefers Sat afternoon for meeting but it varies per month. Some activities like fishing has to be done Sunday morning due to being sponsored by the city and can only be done on a particular month and day and it happens to fall on Sunday. Check out our website for the dates and activities planned for this year.

  4. How much will I be spending?
  5. About $12/month (total $144) paid at time of joining and then once a year after that. This covers the patches that your boy will earn, some pack activity during the year.

You also have to purchase uniform around $70 which can be used for several years if your son does not go through a tremendous growth spurt. Every year you son will still need to get their neckerchief and cap.

There is also a FOS (Friend For Scouting) fee of $70/yr. this is not mandatory but so far, most member has contributed because Scrip can pay for this. 100% participation makes our pack a quality unit.>p> Last is the optional pack activity such as skiing, train ride, the bigger cost item that we did not include in the membership fees to provide flexibility for parents to decide whether they want to participate or not.

Our pack 408 does scrip with Marina, 99 Ranch, and Tin-Tin which will pay for some membership cost and also help with costs within our pack.

  6. Do I need to volunteer A LOT?
  7. Cub scout is led by parents of cub in the pack. All is done on a volunteer basis. We require one parent of the cub (mom or dad) to be present for den activity and pack activity that your son is participating in. You can NOT drop your son off and leave.

If once in a while you need to leave, please coordinate with another parents to take care of your cub and please do not ask the den leader because he/she is already busy with all the other cubs.

We also require that each family (mom or dad) organize at least one activity per year for the group minimum.

On a last note, we provide a open environment for your kids to share in a group (public speaking). They learn through their cub scout handbook what they need to do to go to the next level (goal setting) but more importantly cub scouting provides an opportunity for your son to play safely with other kids while exploring new things and skills. Hopefully you will find that your time and money is well invested.

If you are interested in joining, please contact Mitchell for a enrollment form. He will mail an enrollment pack to you, please fill out and mail back to him. Welcome to the world of scouting. Your son will have lots of fun!
