Space Derby

Rules:

  1. Use only materials supplied with the kit plus any glue, paint or decals.   NO additional materials will be accepted.
  2. All 3 fins provided in the kit must be used.  Shaping is permitted.

  1. You do not need your rubber bands.**  2 lubricated rubber bands will be installed by the Race Committee personnel on race day during Check-In.

  1. Rocket bodies cannot be lengthened.

  1. Each Den can have additional design rules determined and agreed as applicable to their Den only.  The Den must provide a copy of these rules to the Race Committee if a Den wants the Committee to resolve conflicts.

  1. Fragile body designs are discouraged.**   Up to one repair is allowed to the balsa body.

  1. All entries will race.  To win, the scout must be present and participate.

Guidelines:

  1. DO NOT glue the plastic nose cone for the propeller to the rocket.
  2. The notched side of the propeller center MUST face forward.
  3. The “red” plastic sleeve goes on the propeller shaft.  Without it, the rubber band will break.

  1. Lubricate the gap between propeller and nose cone with a 3-IN-1 type multi purpose oil or graphite lubricant.**

  1. Notch 2 slots at the backend for the rubber band's plastic anchor hold.

Place these notches away from the seam joining rocket halves.

  1. Place the plastic hanger notch in the balsa body away from the seam.

  1. Fins should NEVER exceed beyond the backend.  This will interfere with the winding machine.

*          A thin balsa rocket body can and will collapse under the pressure the rubber bands.

**        Lubricant must not present Health Hazard. OSHA defined "health hazard" chemicals include those which are carcinogens, toxic or highly toxic agents, reproductive toxins, irritants, corrosives, sensitizers, hepatotoxins, nephrotoxins, neurotoxins, agents which act on the hematopoietic system, and agents which damage the lungs, skin, eyes, or mucous membranes.
