: Car cannot be more than 2 3/4 inches wide and than 7 inches long.
WEIGHT
: The finished car cannot weigh more than 5 ounces. The weight shown on the Official Race Scale is final. All car parts and materials must be firmly attached. To increase the car’s weight, add wood or metal only; the use of mercury is not allowed. Once a car is turned over to the race staff, any weight that falls off prior to or during a race will not be re-attached. Make sure the weights are securely attached before turning in the car.
CONSTRUCTION OF THE CAR:
The car body may not have any moving parts. The front of the car must have a sufficient amount of area (at least ½") to rest against the starting pin and may not have any part of the car protrude beyond the starting pin in any way. If a car is similar looking both front and back, please mark an arrow on the bottom of the car to note the proper direction of travel.
WHEEL PLACEMENT
: The car body must be at least 1 3/4 inches wide at the axles. It must clear the ground by at least 3/8 inch. If desired, you may change the distance between the front and rear axles. The four wheels, two on each side of the car, must be placed such that the car will straddle the lane guide and maintain all four wheels in contact with the surface of the track.
WHEELS AND AXLES
:Use only Official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles. There are websites that sell Pinewood Derby car kits. Unless it is from the BSA store or website, they are not official wheels. We will not allow any car to race without the correct wheels and axles. You can polish the axles. You may lightly sand the wheels to remove the molding seam on the tread. No other wheel changes are allowed. You may not use bearings, washers, or bushings.
SPRINGING
: The car may not ride on any type of springs.
DETAILS
: Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior details are OK. The finished car with details must meet the maximum length, width, and weight rules. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
ATTACHMENTS
: The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices.
LUBRICATION
: Use dry powdered graphite ONLY. You may not use any other lubricant, especially oils or silicone sprays. No graphite may be applied after the car has been turned in and inspected.
INSPECTION
: Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The Inspectors will disqualify any car not meeting the rules mentioned above. An adult or scout may appeal the findings of the Inspectors to the Race Committee Chairperson, whose decision is final.
ATTENDANCE
: Scouts must be present to race.
Conduct of the Race
INSPECTION:
When a car has passed inspection and has received its number, then it will be placed on a table by a race staff member (one of the Pack Committee members) and will not be handled again until the race It cannot be worked on again once it has been turned in and passed inspection.
REPAIR:
If a car becomes damaged during a race by another car, the scout will be given the opportunity to repair the car before the next race.
INTERFERENCE:
If during a race a car leaves its lane and in doing so interferes with another car; then the car at fault shall be declared to have lost the race. If during this interference the car that was interfered with is negatively affected, the race will be re-run with the three remaining cars.
CAR LEAVES LANE:
If a car leaves its lane during a race without interfering with another car, then it will be considered to have ended its heat at that point. All cars must cross the finish line within their own lanes to successfully complete the race.
