FanPix for January, 2003
Happy New Year! We'll start off 2003 with a look at the beautiful Mt. Emily Lumber Co. Shay no. 1. This 80 ton, 3 truck gearedengine was built by Lima in Sept., 1923 as construction no. 3233, and served out the better portion of her career on the Mt. Emily line near Hilgard, Ore. After retirement, the 1-spot found herself as the property of the Oregon Historical Society, and was leased to the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV, where she was the sole oil burner on the roster. After a well remarked career on the Cass as its no. 2, the engine returned to Oregon in 1994, and was stored on the City of Prineville Ry. in Prineville, Ore. At that time it was regular practice to steam her up at least once a year for on OHS special such as the one Michelle and I caught up with in late summer of 1998 on its way back to Prineville from the BNSF connection at Prineville Jct.
I got this photo near O'Neil, where the tracks rejoin the O'Neil Highway. With several miles of by-the-highway running, we were able to get several good runbys, as well as some awesome pacing video. This photo illustrates the high desert scab lands that the railroad traverses. Photo by Jody Moore. August, 1998.
