FanPix for November, 2002

A light drizzle didn't do anything to dampen the spirits of crews as they shuffled Portland's three beautiful steam engines into position for a series of photos to promote a new regional railroad museum in the Portland area. With Brooklyn Roundhouse, the engines' long-time home threatened with demolition, the museum is propsed as a permanent home and interpretive center for the three engines. They are, from left to right, Spokane, Portland and Seattle 4-8-4 #700, Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4449, and Union Pacific 4-6-2 #197. At one time, all three engines were displayed in or near Oaks Park in Portland. The 4449 is well known from its numerous outings since being restored in 1974 for the American Freedom Train, a livery which it was repainted in for the 2002 season. 700 is just days from steaming out of town to spend two weekends pulling excursion trains in Montana.
