Indigenous Health Activities of DHS Tobacco
Control Unit
For the last 4 years Tobacco Control Unit of DHS has
worked with the Aboriginal Health Council helping to train AHW's to work in
their communities in regard to Anti Tobacco.
A useful resource has resulted which AHC and Quit(SA) are being jointly
funded to reproduce.
There are 5 indigenous projects currently funded by
DHS Tobacco Control Unit.
1. Healthy
Ways operates from DHS Aboriginal Services Division to work on Nutrition and
anti tobacco activities in northern Aboriginal communities including the APY
lands. Contact person is Clinton Cenko
(in TCU on 8226 7277) or Liz Hurrell (8226 6654) in ASD for this project.
2. A joint
project with Quit SA and AHCSA to tailor a Queensland indigenous resource and
further work with AHW's. Contact people
are Andrew Ellerman (Manager of Quit SA) or Lyndy Abram at the Quit line, for
this area.
3. Northern
Metropolitan Community Health Service has been funded over 3 years to work with
Aboriginal young people via Muna Paiendi Community Health Centre adding value
to their existing projects. Contact
person there is Heather Gale.
4. Child and
Youth Health is being funded to use their resources (video and written material
"Nunga's Don't need Puiyas") in schools. Heather Woods is the main contact for this project and she is
working with indigenous young people.
5. Port
Adelaide Football Club has been working in Centrelink offices and Tauondi
College using their Aboriginal footballers as role models to run Quit smoking
courses (with assistance from Quit). They have recently conducted a Quit
smoking course at Tauondi College.
