Curse of Famous Diamond Strikes Again

Once again the curse of the Hopeless Diamond struck the Potter family. It was a dark and rainy night when Potter Diamond exhibition opened on November 12th, 2004 at the Victor and Alberta Museum, formerly known as The International Preparatory School. Showgirl, Daphne Lee and her "Diamond Dandies" set a mirthful atmosphere at the beginning of the show with their rendition of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.”

Although there were four world famous detectives on hand to protect owner Reginald Potter, it was to no avail. Reggie, recently married to Las Vegas showgirl, Daphne Lee, fared no better than his ancestors, so many of whom had died from the curse placed on the world famous gem by the gypsy king after Reggie’s ancestor Taras had won it from them in a game of Platski (a stone stacking game).

The audience, totally ignoring the tragedy of the Potter family, hooted with laughter throughout the evening as the Extremely Amateur Players once again lived up to their name. After the tragic death of Reggie, each table formed one or more detective agencies to search for clues, decode messages and have fun solving the mystery. Prizes were awarded by drawing from the names of teams that had reached the correct solution…but were also given for the most confused solution and to a new category called “The Actors’ Choice.” Participants also enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by a group of fabulous parents and possibly the best dessert buffet in all of Santiago.

Funds raised from this evening of fun went to Casa de Acogido del Lactante (Corporación Grada) also known as “The Babies Home”. This is a non-governmental organization which provides transitional care for children up through the age of two or three who are placed in the home by court order so that their psychological, social and family situation can be diagnosed and a definite course of action decided upon. The Babies Home now functions in two locations and serves 70 children.
