The History Three years ago, a phenomenom snuck into our lives. A feldgling network calling themselves The WB launched a mid-season replacement called "Dawson's Creek". A coming of age drama based on the personal experiences of it's creator, Kevin Williamson, Dawson's revolved around 15 year old Dawson Leery; a naive dreamer, aspiring film maker, & the new goldenboy of a generation. He lived in the perfect town. He lived in the perfect house. He had the perfect parents, & the perfect friends. Childhood friends...loyal, supportive & always there to hear his every whim, and to indulge in his every crisis of 'me-me-me'. We got hooked. And who wouldn't?
Immediately we were sucked into Dawson's world.
We were introduced to his two friends:
Joey Potter Joey... The 15 year old tomboy with the long tan legs and girlish smile. Stubborn, demanding, fiercely independant and overwhelmingly shy. She posed as the voice of reason during a many Dawson-quips. She was too tall, and her broken family suffered a dark past. And she had these unbelievably deep brown eyes... remarkable... that when she spoke, always seemed to hint at something more.
Viewers were floored. We got the feeling that we were witnessing something great in the making... something all too familiar... and we watched...
Pacey Witter Pacey... He was just one of those guys! One of those underachievers who were only good for laughs...one of those that you knew you shouldn't expect much out of but you couldn't take your eyes off of him. As the underdog... the "slacker"... he was witty and charming. A little bit rebellious and a lot of average. Pacey was meant to be the nobody... ...but we knew he wasn't a nobody.
Doomed as the goldenboy's pet sidekick, it just felt like Pacey had so much more to offer. So we watched... and we watched again...
And suddenly their roles seemed to take on a new meaning...
We couldn't help but imagine them in the roles of Benedict and Beatrice, the wise-cracking and sharp tongued arch enemies in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing... who inevetibly fell in love.
Pacey and Joey were strategically positioned opposite one another as an entertainment tactic. Joey was always quick to remark on her hatred for the tall, dark and handsome screw-up, while Pacey was never at a loss to embarrass the high maintenance brunette. Not often did the banter ever really leave them at eachother's throats, but when they did...there seemed to be something there, something "changing" in the mix. Those of us who noticed became obsessed with the idea. Though the show seemed to be following a whole different path: Joey seemed destined to follow the heart of Dawson the goldenboy, even when at first he only had eyes for Jen. And Pacey was again and again cast as the trouble-making, almost-bad,guy with not a lot to do. But the banter never stopped...and the obsessed could never stop wondering what if...
Teased months on end with silly arguments, awkward predicaments, snails, a pond, and a kiss... We were starting to grow hopeless in our need to have these two lonely, beautiful, deserving teenagers finally find eachother. BUT As fate would have it, after months of second guessing... of hoping, of praying on our knees to God and any higher power out there...we were given a sign. Dawson told Pacey, "Because if we're ever going to fight, it should atleast be over a chick" Pacey named his boat True Love. And the intensity between Pacey and Joey rose to new heights as the banter was replaced with easy laughs, deep talks, and awkward glances.
Our prayers have been answered...
Pacey and Joey were destined to cross paths.
And now they are.
