NEW PARENT GROUP SPEARHEADS BILINGUAL EDUCATION IN PALO ALTO SCHOOLS

Chinese immersion targeted as the next language patterned after the successful Spanish immersion Program.

PALO ALTO, Calif. August 14, 2002. More than 70 Palo Alto families have joined forces to further the cause of bilingual education in the Palo Alto school district. Under the name PACE (Palo Alto Chinese Education) this group is working to pave the way for a first Chinese immersion elementary school class in September 2003. This group was formerly known as CPPAS (Chinese Programs in Palo Alto Schools).

"In one-on-one meetings with Palo Alto school board members, I've learned a lot about education in Palo Alto. I'm convinced that this school board is dedicated to preparing our students for leadership in a global economy. They also understand the value of immersion education in terms of high test scores and increased parent involvement," said Grace Mah, PACE's founding member.

"With 1/5th of the world's population speaking Chinese, and China driving the most aggressive growth economy in the world, I want my child to be prepared for the future, especially since we live on the Pacific Rim," said Donald Chin, PACE member and Director of Advanced Engineering at U-Systems, Inc.

In addition to providing students with skills for the future, bilingual education has demonstrated benefits for cognitive thinking, based on years of research by Dr. Kathryn Lindholm-Leary, Professor of Child Development at San Jose State University.

PACE will present a proposal for Chinese immersion education at the Palo Alto Unified School District school board meeting on August 27, 2002, 25 Churchill Avenue, Palo Alto, California.
