The Barefoot Classic

The Horsethief Softball tournament in Knox, PA is known for its characters and quite possibly the most well known, or should it be the most talked about player in many year's history is "Barefoot" Dan Greenawalt.  Dan is now 36-37 years old and hasn't been on a roster in a year or so but when he played (usually with his team called "the outlaws") he drew quite a crowd.

As a somewhat serious softball tournament, most players opt to wear cleats for better traction but not Barefoot.  Greeny claimed he got better traction going shoeless...even with an inch of water on the field, but then again he must have thought he could run faster in blue jeans too as that was his primary choice in threads.  Regardless, to most Knox folk, Dan is the only fella to ever compete in the tournament without wearing any shoes.

Barefoot Greenawalt has probably played in over 15 Horsethief softball tournaments dating back to the early 90's.  To my knowledge his team has never won a game, usually has lots of controversy, and as his team name may suggest (The Outlaws) they are on high alert for police cruisers.

Anyways, good team or not, Barefoot Greenawalt was the best right center fielder to ever step foot onto the Peanut Park ball fields.  Often sporting a old football practice jersey from the high school, his blue jeans, an old Rawlings mitt, and sometimes a ball cap he became a legend without even knowing it.

These days, Greeny is sometimes spotted shooting a game of pool at Mac's or The Carriage Inn....or maybe even the Rod n' Gun Club.  Anytime you see him in town, if he has had enough sauce, a conversation about softball could last for hours and usually end up with him begging for a spot on a team come August.

So a year ago on the 4th of July at a gathering at Bell's house a few of the drunks sitting around came up with the idea to play a little wiffleball.  I think we played til' dark that night or at least until our bodies wouldn't let us go anymore.  From that moment on, we decided that starting in 2004 we were going to host an annual wiffleball tournament.  To honor Barefoot Greenawalt, we decided it was only right to name the event in his honor.

Teams were to consist of four guys and one girl.  The games were 5 innings long and the ten run rule was in effect after 3 innings....so, lets play ball!
