I dived into a golden pool

1. I dived into a golden pool
Wisdom for to find
To escape the grimy dirty air
That fouled my lungs to brown

2. I gambolled and soared and did plummet there
All amid the golden stream
And the snow-white foam rolled around my ears
Like the finest cream

3. I struck out deep with powerful strokes
To seek the golden sand
To touch the bottom for to clean
The foulness off my hands

4. I swam into a light-filled cave
To find inspiration there
To burst through the surface of the golden pool
Into crystal air

5. For oh how beautiful that would be
To gulp that air so pure
And to gaze on the sight of untainted sky
All of pale azure

6. But as I swam into the light-filled cave
I felt a deathly drag
As the weeds that waved at the mouth of the cave
Tangled round my legs

7. The weeds held me in a tightening grip
My every move made it tighten more
Now I lie at the bottom of the golden pool
With my feet trapped in death's door

8. Then a booming resounded in my ears
Like a brazen trumpet's cry
It said "I am the spirit of the golden pool
And I will have my tithe

9. It said "All of those who swim impure
All those of unclean mind
Must begone from this clean and golden pool
But leave their souls behind."

10. "From the foul brown air you bring your grime
It beslimes everything you spy.
Prepare now to leave your filth behind
Prepare yourself to die"

11. I will escape from this golden pool
As I gasp my last breath
And I'll gulp on the bank with my eyes all blank
Like a fish awaiting death

12. I will escape from this golden pool
And sit by the fire at home
As the bubbles that rise as my breath expires
Will mix with the snow-white foam

13. Then ne'er again will I venture me
Into the golden pool
For those who swim with their minds impure
Must pay there with their soul

14. But if you dive in this golden pool
All seeking wisdom's air
And you see my corpse beckon from the weeds
Just leave me rotting there

15. For those who would swim in the golden pool
Must swim there mindfully
Or you'll know the pull of oblivion's coils
And you'll lie here next to me.
