The Fern uncurling

I am the fern

My roots are long

My fronds uncurl

When the sun is strong

I’m innocent

Of right and wrong

I am the fern

I feel the breeze

I taste the breeze

That brings new scents

To hills and trees

I open to it

By degrees

I know your breeze

I feel the rain

I taste the rain

That spatters on

My face again

That fills my stalk

With sap again

I know your rain

I feel the soil

I taste the soil

That gives strength for

My roots to toil

That helps my frondwork

To uncoil

I know your soil

I know your soil

Your sun, your rain

My fronds uncurl

Yet once again

I offer you my spores

My friend

I am the fern

I am the fern

My roots are long

My fronds uncurl

When the sun is strong

I’m innocent

Of right and wrong

I am the fern.
