Future Programmes

It is quite clear that a great deal still needs to be done if the water resources of our planet, and indeed of India itself, is to be conserved and utilized in the most economical manner. There is an obvious need to modify policies for managing our water resources. With a step by step approach, Paani Morcha hopes to achieve its goals by working on the following programmes, some of which have already been initiated:

  • Achieve adequate flows in rivers, starting with the Ganga and the Yamuna.
  • Ensure proper recharge of ground water.
  • Ensure treatment of wastewater up to the tertiary stage.
  • Harness flood or excess rainwater in reservoirs in command areas.
  • Achieve proper distribution of stored water, preferably through cooperatives.
  • Ensure flood control through unhampered flow in natural channels, which may be deepened through dredging.
  • Separate sewage and clean water in urban areas.
  • Rationalise old dam projects starting with the projects on the Narmada.
  • Protect glaciers, forests and water bodies, and their bio-diversity.
