Let the Venture begin! --November 9, 2008,

Kate and I went to the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge today. Went to see the plank house where the Indians would have lived. But alas the house was closed. But we had an unexpected "venture". We walk in the beautifully gray NW November weather and discovered many things.

We talked about oak leaves from the giant tree next to the path, and the huge, big as your head leaf, and the skinny, feather like leaf. We discovered goop floating on one side of a bridge in the water, but not on the other. This fascinated her for a very long time. We poked a stick in and looked at it up close. We watched as a HUGE swan flew over our head and mallards dived for dinner.

On the way back to the car you have to cross over a bridge that goes over the train tracks. Just happened to do this when the train went under us. She loved it. the whooshing wind, the loud whistle. IT was a good venture, indeed.

Goop in the water (duckweed) was the biggest hit. "It's so funny!" she said over and over as she ran from one side of the bridge to the other.

We also had an interesting discussion about where the Indians are now. How do you explain westward expansion and the US attempt at genecide to a 3 year old?

I am looking forward to more Ventures.. - MAMA
