Review - Valanga Khoza “Sebe” demo
“Sebe” is the latest offering from South African-born Australian
world-music performer Valanga Khoza. His next project is a CD
which is due for release around Easter, so world-music punters like myself and
officionados alike have only this 16-track demo (?!), his many workshops and
festival appearances to tide us over until then.
Due
to my lack of knowledge of and exposure to world music, I found it difficult to
listen to and contrast the tracks on the tape. I have this problem with all forms of world music that I come
across. This didn’t detract from what enjoyment I did get from the tape and I
feel that I can compare this music with and place him in the same league as Lucky
Dube, Me’shell
Ndegeocello, Angelique
Kidjo and other radio-rotation stars.
