Review - Sloan “Navy Blues”
album on Murder Records
through Shock!
Brit-pop has a new name, and that name is Sloan.
Based in Canada, Sloan
is a 4-piece pop outfit with no qualms about their musical ideologies, their
roots or their demographic target! The album “Navy Blues” on Murder Records through Shock! is 43½ minutes of pure pop pleasure,
guaranteed to please the most hardened or cynical music critic or punter.
From the opening coughs and splutters of She Says What She Means, each song
springs from the speakers/headphones and delights in its brightness and
freshness. There are borrowings from all generations of the British Pop genre,
from “Sergeant Peppers” to “Aladdin Sane” to “Abacab”
to “Morning
Glory”, and I’m sure from some yet to be instigated as well. But then
throw in some Doobie
Bros, Urge
Overkill, Ben
Folds (Five), America
and The
Eagles, among others, to keep you guessing, and you’ll have a rough
idea of where they’re at!
For a dash of refreshing and genuine innovation
keep an eye out for Sloan “Navy Blues” on Murder Records through Shock! Pester your local Youth Network or request program for some
airplay (especially Iggy and Angus, Sinking Ships, Keep On Thinkin’ and Stand By
Me, Yeah!). This is already the best pop record I will hear this year HHHHH
