Review – The Pearly Gatecrashers “New! Fluffy! Delicious!”

independent mini-album through Shock!

I was introduced to the Pearly Gatecrashers by way of their 1996 kọŋkiubәin / ShockPopsuey” album but was recently given the happy opportunity to retrospectively review of their mostly independent back-catalogue. As you might see from my initial review I was not unimpressed with what was put together at that point and looked very much forward to the new task.

1991’s “New! Fluffy! Delicious!” rekindles the alterna-pop sounds of the pre-grunge radio waves when the word indie really meant independent! Think Clouds, Cleopatra Wong, or even Voice of the Beehive and you’d have where Lenore Betteridge, Tim Butt and co were headed at that point in their careers.

Featuring Lenore’s sister Gabrielle on bass (where as all good ‘rock chicks’ of the 90s found themselves – apologies Gabrielle!) and percussionist Nathan Jones, all the foundations are here for a promising and fun-time-for-all career on the charts. This is the sort of album I would like to have put out, with as many different styles of pop-music as possible, including some calypso, a jingly Rico-tune or two.

If yours is early-90s indie-pop with a hi-fi flare, seek out the Pearly Gatecrashers’ “New! Fluffy! Delicious!«««
