Review – mav and Her Majesty’s Service ‘Long Time Nothing New’

single through Global Savile

Following the release of their triple-a sided single earlier this year, mav and Her Majesty’s Service are proud to bring you their newest single ‘Long Time Nothing New’ through their own Global Savile label.

You could say that life imitates art in the naming of this single, seeing that it was March when triple-a side came out to critical acclaim. But there is no revisiting already-trodden ground for this release… well, not for MFC and the crew at least. Opening with an almost frightening My Sharona drum beat, the title-track very quickly dispels cover-version fears. Utilising the talents and equipment at Melbourne’s Sound Horse studios, the band has combined the sound created for Velvet on the last release with where Tim and You Am I were for their last few records. Stars Are Falling might almost be a country release along the same lines as 40 Alexander’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Hysteria. And to close the show you have a choice of two versions of At Her Command – the third-track original is more guitar-oriented whilst the closing Tarkus Version is more piano oriented… you can choose which of the two you would prefer the record to finish.

mav and Her Majesty’s Service are constantly playing around their home-town and questions of “When are you coming to Sydney?” seem always to be avoided. Nevertheless, if they can latch onto a You Am I or like-band National tour in the near future they should find a ready audience, not that their own material is wont for fans… Bring On The Album, too, by the way!
