Review - Lynda Wehipeihana "Thinking About You"
Music video on My Label through Hot Records/Didgeridoo
Lynda
Wehipeihana has just
released her first music video, being the first single from her forthcoming
album “Project” on My
Label through Hot Records/Didgeridoo.
You might remember Lynda from various Songsalive! showcases around town a year
or two ago, or from her debut album “Larger Than Life” which inspired much writing
about and peforming by her at the time.
The video creative is a dream-state which producer
Doug Hawkins says came directly from the song. A young woman drifts past a
four-poster with swaying curtains and multi-imposed images that produce for the
viewer the images that Lynda’s lyrics soon will. Then the lady
herself is introduced in a style that could be Kate
Ceberano, Kerry-Anne Kennerly, and/or Renée Geyer, drifting across the screen in a state fitting the
song.
The song “Thinking
About You” captures
the emotion of ‘4a.m, can’t eat, can’t sleep, can’t think of anything or anyone
else, trying to take your mind off but failing…’ Whilst the encapsulation of
this mood seems to have been attempted through the music video (which is
available in VHS video and PC and Mac format enhanced CDs) I found myself
looking for a reason to enjoy it. I like Lynda and her work a lot, but could not get into this new release
at all... bodes well for the album review, doesn’t it! In a pre-review
communication with her
manager I found that a number of people tried to put their ‘I would have
done it this way’ into the post-release wash-up (everyone is an expert after
the fact), but when you’re limited by time (only one day with the camera) and
money (Lynda is still an independent artist) you have to stick to
a plan which may not necessarily please everyone.
But the free-to-air programs and cable channels have
added it, raising Lynda’s profile from suburban to
national levels, which can only help the forthcoming album. And when you’re
happy with the look of the video and it achieves that for which it was created
then you’re on a very good thing.
