Review – Hydro “Flag”

independent EP

Alternative music doesn’t get any more pop than Sydney’s Hydro, or is it Pop music that is becoming more alternative? Whichever the direction “Flag” from Hydro might go a way toward convincing those who need it.

Jeremy Edwards is the man behind this almost-new style of music. And you’d be none the wiser for reading the band’s bio either, with cited influences that include Led Zeppelin, Capt Beefheart, Howlin Wolf, Rolling Stones and “a head full of sounds from Budapest.” Add to all this gigs shortly after their “Gene Pool” EP with Kim Salmon, Kneivel, Crow and Lavish and you may or may not have a feel for what’s happening here on their newest 3-track still-independent release.

Whilst there are numerous sounds and styles from You Am I to Soundgarden to Utopian Babies here on “Flag” there are just as many fresh new ideas expressed on these three tracks. No one track stands out from the other, which may make it difficult for the Kingsmills of the world to pick one to represent the band but may also guarantee more of them to be added!

If you’re a fan of any of the aforementioned, or even if you’re looking for a new name of which to watch the rise, Hydro “Flag” would be best sought, with “Gene Pool” an addition with a retrospective in mind!
