Review - Gravity independent self-titled CD-EP

There is not much that can be said about this Sydney based outfit, from the cover of their self-titled CD. 6 tracks are what you’re given, written by the band and mastered by Steve (301) Smart so you have to either ring the number given, or put the disc on to find out more.

We initially took the listening option. The disc moves from Black-with-White funk/soul, in the style of Rockmelons, through bare-boned acoustica to a rock track with a Martin Luther King sample intro/outro. Stand out tracks from this record include Desire, with ‘three chords and the truth’ combined with a Queen ("The Works"/"A Kind of Magic") keyboard sound, and Doctor, which seemed to lack in depth during the verse, introduced the electrical meat during the chorus and seemed to have as many as three completely different and disjointed musical themes throughout.

The overall sound seemed very thin for a funk/soul based muse and the outcome seems to be of a band that are not completely sure where they’re going at this point. More information about the band and the songs on the cover is paramount if you want anyone to take notice or even make enquiries (just a phone number won’t cut it for most, nowadays), and a little more artwork wouldn’t go astray. Not a good start
