Review - Grant McLennan “In Your Bright Ray”

album on Beggars Banquet/Cortex through Shock!

Many people spend 15 years perfecting their craft, utilising various vehicles and coming & going from a scene as they see fit. GW (Grant) McLennan is one such craftsman: since 1982 various releases have been graced with his noms des plume. Here is 1997’s effort - confusingly packaged in a brightly coloured thing called “In Your Bright Ray” on Beggars Banquet/Cortex through Shock!

One would automatically associate McLennan with countless “80s indie pop” hits right from the opening of the lead/title track. And for the uninitiated, it’s a breath of freshness in amongst the punk/grunge/disco being jammed down our proverbials on commercial/national radio & TV.

Now, this reviewer likes usually to pick one or two stand-out tracks, but as I sat & listened, each tune was just as remarkable as the last and in no way prepared me for the next!

It will be interesting to see how radio treats “In Our Bright Ray” from Grant McLennan, or indeed, which song is chosen as the single (the best solution is Album on the Month!)
