Review – Christine Anu “Sunshine On A Rainy Day”

Single on Mushroom through Festival

Van Morrison, Paul Kelly, Christine Anu – while the reaction varies in immediacy for each of these three artists, the result is always the same: if they’re on the radio or telly, it goes off. Ask me why and I wouldn’t be able to tell you in the former and latter cases, so when I received the new single from Christine Anu “Sunshine On A Rainy Day” on Mushroom through Festival I was somewhat apprehensive.

But I gave it a look and a listen and came away from the player knowing that I had heard the song before as it has been on the radio quite a lot recently, but not actually listened to it. It is an atypical Christine song, full of happiness, love, and a good beat worthy of an ARIA or other televised Australian awards programme. But the bonus to this particular release is that there is a version here for everyone. I’m a Triple J listener, in case you hadn’t realised from previous reviews, and had a preference for the Wicked Beat and Scotia Nostre mixes, while the radio mix would sit just as happily on either the Austereo or affiliated Mix stations.

Radio success yes. Chart success maybe, but not my cuppa…
