Review – Temporal Lobe “Modern Assembly” independent album

Those who love it loud will truly appreciate the debut album / third release from Adelaide’s Temporal Lobe. Damien Shen, Joel Pannell, Matt Richardson and Andrew Smart have been cranking the decibels since at least 1997 to critical acclaim and they have seen fit to select October 2001 as the release date for “Modern Assembly,” recorded independently with the help of a small injection from the South Australian ARTS program in June of that year.

And crank it they do, with eleven tracks (one of which is not a song, hence the title no song) together with the obligatory ‘phantom,’ bonus or unlisted tracks of “dynamic, intelligent rock…relying on a combination of driving rhythms and powerful vocals.” Obviously these guys have found a niche, which sits quite well in the same category as bands like Bob Sledge, Dern Rutlidge and / or Thumlock, Chris Cornell and / or Soundgarden, and has been a hit with bands such as Elephant Gun, Lo-Tel, Test Eagles, Iota, Nevermore and Not From There.

Temporal LobeModern Assembly” is an excellent collection of tunes that have been developed by a team of at least four over at least five years. These guys just continue to sweep all before them and, based on humanflesh and this new release, there is no reason why they won’t continue to do so!
