Review – Pacer 21 “Nowhere…”

Independent single through MGM

Victoria’s Surf Coast: from the mouth of the Barwon River at the east, to the beachside resort of Lorne in the West, the most famous spot being Torquay, home of Bell’s Beach and the Rip Curl Pro. But it’s to the eastern-most town of Ocean Grove for the sounds of Pacer 21 that we’re directing our attention: to three guys; Wayne, Daniel and Adam (the latter of which a Surf Coast ring-in) and the sounds that they create in the basement of an abandoned asylum which are now available on the single Nowhere through MGM Distribution.

‘Surf Rock’ is the name I have given the genre that this single represents, from those long-gone nights at Narrabeen’s Royal Antler when Midnight Oil, Radio Birdman, Painters & Dockers and/or the Celibate Rifles were regularly featured (sorry, that’s about as Surf as this Sydney Westie guy gets). But Wayne’s use of the acoustic guitar has lent another side to this all-yet-none-of-the-above cum Early-Hours sonic attack that sways between hard-hitting ballad and hard-hitting rocker.

The list of supported-acts lends credence to the further breadth of their repertoire, as does National JJJ, Melbourne RRR & PBS and Geelong K-Rock air play credit! There are doubtless many bands from around the Surf Coast Shire, as big as it is, but measuring up to Pacer 21 will be difficult.
