Review – Matthew Lloyd “Hardlines”
Matthew Lloyd is an
artist whose musical influences/sound-alikes are not
hard to pick, ergo John C Fogerty,
Roy Orbison,
Wings, Chris Turner, Gwyn
Ashton, as you will no doubt hear for yourself on his 1999
independent mini-album “Hardlines.”
Packaged quite simply
yet effectively (although I consider a jewel-case the only choice for a
full-length album) this record was made with exceptional production depth and
clarity overlooking the South Pacific Ocean at the end of the Snowy Mountain
Highway at Tathra.
A collection of
strong songs that bridge rock genres including country, blues, swamp and
straight-out, the majority of these tracks would sit comfortably on many play
lists on adult, country, rock or regional radio stations. The stand-outs from
the album include Watch The Numbers Fall, Shrive
and the song that seems to be doing it for him You Only Did It For Money.
Matthew Lloyd “Hardlines” is as good a debut record as any, and
with the backing and/or support of Rolling Stone, Big Backyard, North by Northwest
and other impressive music industry names-to-drop, should herald bigger and
better things for this Snowy Mountain Man!
