Review – Leftnut “Pigs Arse”
independent EP on Tuntfel Records
One
thing that many Western Australian artists share is a sense of fun – bands like
Flanders,
Eskimo Joe,
Beaverloop,
Left Nut, all,
from one aspect or another, do not take themselves too seriously. Most of them
are achieving various levels of acceptance/airplay across the other side of the
country and that’s one of the aspects of Left Nut “Pig’s Arse”
that is different from those other bands – radio-add ability.
“Pig’s
Arse” is a record that seemed to have had the fun
override what might otherwise have been a good recording. There is an overall
lack of gelling between the players, which comes and goes, as well as a tuner
(distortion used instead) and the songs seem stunted and contrived rather than
naturally flowing: ‘let’s think of a word that rhymes with… and use that’.
Left Nut have in this release gone for a Custard
style, without the polish that Custard
would have used post-production, if there was a post-production phase of this
EP. The irreverence of Creatures of Habit reminded me of Sydney’s Apostrophe and Delores took
a Mental
as Anything turn but at the end of the day I didn’t enjoy this
record at all – sorry guys….
