Review – Heifer self-titled

independent CD EP

Formed in Casino in the north-east of NSW, Heifer take their name from that city’s Beef Week which brings people from all over the country to that small rural town. And the sound that these four now Sydney-based lads create on their debut EP is just as meaty as anything you would expect to see during that non-vegan country fair.

Heifer cite many influences to their music, much of it heavy. It is interesting to note that the sounds I nominated while listening to the CD - Testeagles, Morphine, Soundgarden, RHCP, Superheist, Kiss/Gene Simmons, Primus funk-styled rhythm with extra-power-bass – are not too far from those they say are the basis to their being – Tool, FNM, Dead Kennedys, Mark of Cain. Mark fairly launches the listener into this aural assault, and the rest of the EP follows suit, peaking for mine at the end with Nancyboy Surprise (poofta-bashing with a happy ending) and Prick (a full-on no-holds-barred this-is-how-we-see-life kinda thang).

And the day after I write this review, I am stuck in Easter traffic headed north for the weekend to the sounds of Heifer on my radio… a good omen, me thinks! Heifer self-titled independent CD – a great release!!
