Review - Cannibal Corpse “Gallery of Suicide”
album on Metal Blade Records through Shock!
Cannibal
Corpse - a band whose name invokes fear and loathing
in the hearts of shopkeepers, as well as the ka-ching of their registers! The
fuss caused by previous releases in this country is prevalent in the packaging,
artwork and overall content of this, their newest album “Gallery
of Suicide” on Metal
Blade Records through Shock!
Opening
this opaque black-plastic jewel-box you are confronted with a rather
Transylvanian scene - a castle, high on a mountain (maybe even it is the mountain). This is The Gallery,
where you can witness various methods and results of self-destruction. You
thumb through the graphics under and around the even more descriptive and
bile-inspiring lyrics and get exactly what you expect from these masters of all
things in black music. Death, serial murder, armagedon, more death, things to
do when you’re dead, things to do with
the dead - I was actually feeling quite ill from all of this and I had not even
turned on the record! When I did, I was treated to more than an hour of
better-than-typical death/speed/thrash metal with standout tracks including Sentenced to Die, From Skin to Liquid and the closer Hammer Smashed Face from their live “Vile” set.
Be
warned, though, unless my player was acting up, track 1 only works in a PC with
the relevant software - it’s the video for Devoured by
Vermin as well as a bio and pics of the band. To understate the
obvious, however, you’d have to be right-into the dark side of life, death and
music to be even looking for this one! Until today, filth in my collection was
represented by Tscabeze
“Opus One” (Warhead Records), but
those guys are rank amateurs! Five hammer-smashed gore-oozing NNNNN for “Gallery
of Suicide” - a masterpiece from the dark side
