Review – 7Seven “Superiority Complex”
Mini-album on Byron Style through MGM/Phantom
7Seven is a group of five power-funk musicians who broke out of the NSW North Coast
in 1997 to acclaim which included Kingsmill’s comment that they were ‘one of the best new talents’. To
follow up sets at Schoolies, The
Extreme Games, Glenworth and in support of Jebediah, Grinspoon and
Tea Party Byron Style and MGM/Phantom
present the mini-album “Superiority Complex”, the follow-up to 7Seven’s 1998 self-titled debut.
As their press declares, 7Seven
have cleverly combined “heavy rock and hard funk with the key elements of
power, melody and groove”. It was this statement that enticed outright but “Superiority Complex” was a little slow to grow on me: Give Me Back My Gun,
the fourth track on the record, was the one to jump out and grab me with its
grinding riff and thumping rhythms. But this was about all. I found the CD to
be a union of at least Koяn (especially in Boom Boom’s ‘chorus’), Ricaine, Red
Hot Chili Peppers, Superheist
and Grinspoon (these latter two stand out in the closer Please Continue)
but all through my listenings there was an underlying
something-else that I just could not pin-point, which is definitely not a bad
thing…
Don’t get me wrong – there is an undeniable force
behind the energy they emanate through this record and from all reports and
photos 7Seven kick live arse… I can’t wait to have my ears numbed by these guys but
there seems something amiss in this release for mine! «««
