Review – Rebecca Rennie @ 12 Bar Club
London, Oct 99

After six weeks in the Big Apple, Rebecca Rennie did the old transatlantic thing, kicking off three weeks in Europe with a gig at the West End’s 12 Bar Club to a receptive but talkative crowd.

Tonight’s set was more your traditional jazz fare with double-bass, brushes, and a semi-acoustic Gibson. It was also a more relaxed affair than New York’s gig with Becc opting initially for the mid-stage barstool. On that barstool the regular audience communication facet of her show was exchanged for the more traditional emotion of the genre, although there was some conversation with the crowd when The Castle was mentioned, and it turned out that Becc was introducing her song with the same name as the Australian comedy (“Tell ‘im ‘e’s dreamin”).

Sound and lighting qualities vary from venue to venue and tonight’s were of the standard worthy of an international act. The only setback of the evening was the delay between songs (they seemed to know what was next… maybe that was mood-setting they were doing) and the MTVesque “Woo”s when anything slightly trendy was mentioned by Rebecca in her mid-set intros and outros. “I wrote this in Ecuador” “WOO!”… We appreciate your appreciation but consider other who might not!

Onward to Amsterdam and more smoky barrooms! Talk about your Dutch treat (sorry)!
