Review - Tokakros@Cat &
Fiddle, Balmain 28 Feb 1998
Being one not normally for world-oriented
music, I actually happened upon this gig by accident. As it turns out, tonight
was the last of Sundays in February at the Cat &
Fiddle for all-singing all-percussive Tokakros.
The set tonight featured an amazing array of
percussion instruments both ‘traditional tribal’ and jazz-styled, and vocal
harmonies mostly self-penned by Peter, Linda, Gemma
and Jess
in that order according to the credits during the mid-set audience-connection
sessions. Tokakros
could convert any bohemoth to their fold, catching you up in their enthusiasm and
moving about the stage to access different tablas, bongos, maraccas,
jingle-bells, drum kits, even a triangle in good-old Mike Post fashion.
Tonight’s show was exceptional, not only because
I wasn’t supposed to be there, but also because it is a new portrayal of a
growingly popular music style (or styles) by a remarkable group of musicians
whose enthusiasm for their craft is more than infectious. I would suggest
finding out more for yourself at a gig near you, through their self-titled
debut album, or through their website http://www.eagles.com.au/~lindama «««««
