Review – Damien Gerard Studio
Services “Grow Your Own Fore!”
Compilation on Foghorn
Records
Since 1995 Damien Gerard Studios and Foghorn
Records have been compiling the best music from young unsigned bands who have
found the DGSS experience. Here on “Fore!”,
the fourth such compilation, DGSS have brought together 17 unknown acts
(unknown to those who have been reading and writing about and broadcasting
Australian New Music since 1993) from around Sydney from many genres, styles
and combinations.
In music today, it is generally the guys who
front the band vocally; the women being left to the rhythm duties. Here on “Fore!” it’s not until Thunderware’s
appearance on track 4 do the guys have a say, and then again with Kevlar
on track 8. And the girls are singing up a storm in styles ranging from
staight-ahead jazz, AOR pop/rock, alternative almost-punk, Tori
Amos-meets-Something
Urban but when the guys take over, its in the traditional
male-dominated muses of ska, metal, punk and suburbs-rock.
In this hour-plus collection,. Standouts
include Four Bolt Main, Vamplifier, Appleseed and Pocket
Davy Crocket (names that, since receiving this CD, have been spied all
over the street press!). Doubtless if the launch shows haven’t already happened
we are soon to be as inundated as we can be with the traditional gigs around
the now replete live Sydney circuit. But no two gigs or bands will be alike,
guaranteeing the support of punters of old and lovers of new music both at the
venues and the record shops
