Review - Mary Schneider “Yodelling Classics”
single on ABC Music through
EMI
After a very long run of 5-star releases,
including Graeme
Connors releases from One
of the Family, John
Nutting’s Saturday Night
Country Favourites and Pixie’s Country Theatre trio, ABC have finally
released some good old fashioned crap! That’s right - “Australia’s Queen of
Yodelling”, Mary Schneider yodels to the all-time best known overtures,
including Rosini’s
William Tell, Bizet’s
Carmen and Offenbach’s
Can Can. This record makes me wish
someone had an uzzi 9mm high on that hill with the lonely goat-herd.
The redeeming feature of this release is the
magnificent recording of the Sydney International Orchestra led
by the famous Tommy Tycho AM OBE, who I am almost certain would not have been
part of this if he knew it would be used for this travesty.
Howard (Private
Parts) Stern loves her; she
makes Julian Clary smile: this
can certainly not be used to accredit this release! I’m sure Doug Mulray will be
latching onto this as he did for that yodelling piece they’re now using on the
Fosters Lite Ice ad. This total panning may mark the end of my ABC Music reviewing
days, but yodelling makes me cringe at the best of times!
