Review - Frank Ifield “Hearts On Fire”

single on ABC through EMI

When I saw the name Frank Ifield on this single I thought to myself, “Isn’t this one of the guys my mum & dad used to listen to when I was a nipper?!” And surely enough, it is Mr I-Remember-You-ooo! himself; back yet again, this time on ABC through EMI, with a new single Hearts on Fire, Frank’s version of an Eddie Rabbitt tune.

Hearts on Fire is an AOR-country crossover tune about a love that shouldn’t be. Written by Eddie with Even Stevens and Tyler, it is the type of song you always see mimed on those glitzy US country-music shows with the low-down guitar, the C&W accent & the clichéd phrasing in the chorus.

I put this song in a category ahead of Kevin Johnson’s 1995 come-back attempt, but the same category as Johnny Chester and those other long-timers. It’s the same voice as we remember from those big hits, but for all its catchiness, it’s just not Frank. HHI
