Review - Darren Coggan “Back In My Hometown”

single on ABC through EMI

Down Wagga Wagga way lives a man called Darren Coggan. Being a musician from that Murrumbidgee town, you’d almost expect him to have taken up with country music. His recording of Freedom Road , taken up by ABC for his contribution to their 1996 “Brand New Country” compilation CD, proved the inevitable that eventually this small-town boy would be signed to Australian’s country music leader.

Back In My Home Town could have been written just as much about Redneck Alabama as for Wagga, with distinct C&W production qualities about it. This is much the same as Freedom Road, which had a mandolin added to the almost Steve Earle vocals, but more distinctively Australian in its Country and Western approach.

Darren was part of a tour that took four young players, including Tamworth’s Felicity, around the country early last year. With the Country Fest returning to a theme park near you in August/September this year, Coggan will be making a bigger mark than that and a more lasting impression on the country crowd alongside Lee & Tania Kernaghan & more.
