Review - Urban Excentrics
“Backyard Attitude”
independent album
Urban
Excentrics are a pair of expat Westralians whose jazz/blues/rock leanings are
performed live as a duo but recorded with all the trimmings. Larry
(Essendon)
Hoofs
and Anne
Palumbo create an eclectic mix of music which makes for very
interesting listening under the guise of their independent full-length debut “Backyard Attitude”.
Influences and styles as wide as David (Bread) Gates, Jeff (ELO)
Lynne, John (True Blue) Williamson, Small
Faces, Mark Ferrie/Lou
Reed, Reg
(Mental
As Anything/Dogtrumpet)
Mombassa, James
(Midnight
Oil) Moginie,
Chet
Atkins and Michael
Fix/Tommy Emmanuel
truly saturate this recording. The trump card is Anne’s classical training
which combines with her vocal layering and “Go The Bombers”’ guitar virtuosity
to create an excellent debut. The only downside is the first guitar-effect
change in Brings Me Undone, which
could have been smoother. This seems to have been missed by the Big Backyard
people, who have added this to rotation
over the coming months.
In adopting and adapting all of these styles
and sounds, Larry and Anne have discovered both a unique
and original sound for Urban Excentrics’
debut album “Backyard Attitude” HHHH¶
