The Trophy Wives are a Newtown-based quintet that
is dedicated to exploring the boundaries of contemporary pop music. Or so they
say… This is their first release, hence the demo tag, and the feel, as well as
the self-confessed Neil Finn, Karma
County, and Grant Lee Buffalo tilts
at your slower-tempo Adult-cum-Alternative artists like Icecream
Hands, Massive
Attack, Portishead,
Radiohead,
neil’s head… (No! Now I’m just being silly…) and their live set
pretty much prepares one for the recorded set, not that there’s anything wrong
with that!
Glen Colley is on guitars and lead
vocals, with a dodgy background that includes Steve Bisley impersonations and
guitars/vocals with short-lived urban-legend creating Phlegm Fatale.
The sisters Kate and Jane Adams lend a classically
trained edge to the band with keyboard, violin, trumpet and vocal duties (Kate
and Glen share lead and backing vocals
whilst Jane harmonises where necessary: you hear Kate
on Stay). And then there’s the beat of the band, comprising Phil
Whelan up back and Luke O'Dwyer down low.
The band
has been together for about a year and in that time has crafted a unique sound.
(I always liked Glen’s writing – that’s why I’m using it for the bulk of this
review!) They play fairly regularly around town and fairly regularly update
their website with all the details so drop by, drop them a note, seek them out
and snavel yourself a copy of this fine recording before they lose themselves
in the big wide wonderful world that is the music industry and forget about
those of us who need to keep working for a living…
