Review – The Divas “Calling All Divas”
There isn’t too much known about Brisbane’s The Divas, save for the fact that they are the music vehicle for one Damion Young. And it is not an easy record to get into…
From the up-tempo feel-good How High? complete with radio-mic effect totally obscuring Damion’s voice, which turns out to be a convolution of Iva (Icehouse) Davies, Brent (Dervishes) Lean and Steve (Mi-Sex) Gilpin, through the alternative pop and rock and ambience to the total almost freeform jazz/alternative rock fusion that is Goldcoast Nightclubs, there are so many moods to this record one could not be in the same mind-set at both ends of a listening! Sort of like the Luna experience, really. The other track that stands out apart from How High? is Gym, which I am sure was on mid-to-high rotation on the Js recently, a feat in itself as the record was made in 1998.
Eight tracks totalling some 27 minutes isn’t quite an album but it’s more than an EP, so if it’s not your bag, it doesn’t go for too long. But let it go for a while, it might just grab you, deep down, where it counts! It might take a while…
