Review - Something Urban
‘Tonic For Henry’
EP on Monkeyboy Records
It’s hard to put a finger on exactly what it
is that Something Urban
are about. From the artwork on the packaging of their CD “Tonic for Henry” and the self-caricatures thereon,
they come across as your typical alterna-band having a bit of fun in their
youth before the serious side of life settles in and they have to move out to
the suburbs.
When the music starts up, though, you get a
completely different picture. Reasons,
their quasi-Portishead
Triplej high-rotation hit, is one
example from the seven given on the disc, while Trolley Boy goes right the other way entirely (ask the band about
the session that produced that one!). Produced and featuring a cameo
appearance by TJ Eckelberg
and mixed by Phil Punch, this record explores ground not normally trodden by
the youth of today, especially those who choose a pop/alternative music-route.
Standout tracks include Reasons and Wait,
although those where Rach explores her vocal abilities
are exceptional. Something Urban ‘Tonic
For Henry’ EP on Monkeyboy Records - the chicken has a surprise
reference! «««««
