Review - RAHtze “Smashed
Jaffa’s”
CD EP on Discobean Records
RAHtze (fka RAH) are a powerhouse 3pc from
Sydney’s creative hub, inner-city Newtown. With Flea on bass and vocals,
ably assisted by Gavin on guitars and Karl from Lixivius
on drums, RAHtze deliver with their debut “Smashed Jaffa’s” EP what you get on
stage - an all-out aural attack of hard rock on the hard-core edge of the
genre.
It’s the clean and clear vocals that carry
this EP with the musical side of the whole release swimming in a thick layer of
mud and hiss, which is a great shame given their recorded debut on the “Grow Your Own Fore”
(Foghorn) compilation of late last
year. Given the pedigree of the CD (band, producer, studio) you would have
expected cleaner production throughout.
Cracking On and It’s 5 are this EP’s standout achievements, as are the Jeff
Buckleyesque effects on Surfer,
but one would hope a re-mastering or re-recording would be in store if radio
airplay is to be expected outside the community realm. Jaffa’s what? is my
other question! ««¶
