Review - Peggy Van Zalm
“Revival”
independent EP
Many Australian bands out of the 80s &
into the 90s found that overseas success didn’t also mean united longevity. The
internal discontent and musical differences (etc) usually led to core members seeking
solo return tickets; or they continued on to as much acclaim as the band. Such
is the case of Peggy Van Zalm, whose solo career has arisen from the ashes of Martha’s
Vineyard and is marked by the release of her current EP “Revival”.
With the able assistance of Graham (Buzz)
Bidstrup of The
Angels, Gangajang
and much production and session fame, “Revival”
transcends mixtures of folk, pop, soul, funk, gospel and blues through a sound
that encompasses elements of Joni
Mitchell, Sinead
O’Connor, Talking
Heads, Deb Conway, Lisa Fitzgibbon/Nerkep and
Tiddas.
Standout tracks include the title, the single Wise
Woman and the Stevie
Wonderesque Infatuation.
“Revival” is an independent release
and an excellent sample of Peggy the artist and where she’s
been. Hopefully it will lead to more commercial success «««««
