Review - Muzzy Pep
self-titled independent EP
When submitting an entry to Triplej Unearthed, you are
asked to send in only one song. Muzzy Pep
won the recent Newcastle
leg of the famous national contest on the basis of One 85, the opening track of their self-titled independent EP from
earlier this year.
The thing with One 85 is that it is not their best song! So imagine how much
better they would be received on the live circuit if one of the other songs
from either their live set or this EP had been sent in! One 85 is more your brass-oriented Nancy Vandal/Linocut
offering. Any of the other tracks, like the heavy-indie Miss Callenous or Eating
Clouds & Drinking Paint, the Heatmiser/Cure/Status
Quo mix of Circle Work,
or the Sex
Pistolsesque Rattle In The
Dash are closer to what you’re more likely to experience at a gig.
The “Muzzy
Pep” EP is an excellent example of the depth and breadth of the band’s
repertoire, and following it up with either another EP or a full-length album
should be on the band’s list of things-to-do-quite-quickly if the wave of the Unearthed win is to
have the most made of it «««« ¶
