Review - Lunar Sea Boatmen
“Greetings Earthlings”
album on Hell Records
Ian Purdie has an album out under the
performance-collective name of Lunar Sea Boatmen.
Produced by Purdie and Steve (Sports, Royal
Slyness) Cummins, the album “Greetings Earthlings” is much more than worthy of the
attention it seems not to be getting.
Vocally, Purdie combines the sounds of Thomas
Dolby, Doc (Angels)
Neeson
and John
Lydon (in the best possible way, especially in Butterfly). Aurally, he and Cummins
have recreated and combined the sounds produced by 80s artists who were then
ahead of their time - Karl (World Party)
Wallinger,
Mrs Dolby’s
aforementioned son,
Mike
(Waterboys)
Scott;
and the big-name producers Hugh Pagdam, Chris Thomas, Ross
Wilson, Todd Lundgren. So with all these comparisons and sounds, why
the hell are they being overlooked by the majors and/or radio??
Standout tracks on the record include New Light for the Ian Moss-like strat sound, Hanging at the Ocean and Uniting in The Dark for the sensational
separation, and the Carlos
Alomar riff in Hanging...,
Samara Cafe, All I Ever, Stereo Hysteria;
there is not a bad song on this album!
“Greetings Earthlings” from Ian Purdie and his Lunar Sea Boatmen: the
star-scale of 1-5 is not enough!!!
