Review – Jedd self-titled EP/demo CD
Put Gwen
(No
Doubt) Stefani in front of either Skulker or Doradus and you’d pretty much have Jedd, a Sydney (?)-based three-piece alterna-pop/rock
outfit whose four-track demo arrived on my desk courtesy of Jo Bryson
and the Future Sounds radio show.
The CD is presented like a proper-release EP with the
art-work but comes across as a demo with the CD-R disc with hand-written
titles, and the tape-player stop-button thump at the end of each track. But
that aside, and Say Goodbye opens the aural account
fairly solidly with more Skulker than anything, but still that commercial edge I
can’t put my finger on even after three spins… Mirror
follows with neither of the above in initially a quiet moment but then, well –
put Skulker behind some acoustic guitars and you’d pretty much
have it… Number
Ten turns up the tele for a pop swing thing,
with appropriate chunk FX added through the chorus… Twisted Shaken takes an interesting twist for the close, with
more rock for your money than we’ve become accustomed, but still there’s an
altera-edge to it all.
Sorry about all the references to the four-piece
Sydney chick-band doing the rounds, but that seems to be the strongest
influence to it all... if you like them, you’ll like Jedd; if not, you’ll probably like them for the other
stuff they do anyway!
